5 Common Microsoft Office Errors and How to Fix Them

Troubleshooting Like a Pro

Even the most robust software suites encounter occasional hiccups. Here are five common Microsoft Office errors and the official troubleshooting steps to resolve them.

1. Unlicensed Product Warning

If you see “Unlicensed Product” at the top of your apps, your activation may have lapsed or failed to sync. Go to File > Account in any Office app, sign out, and sign back in with the Microsoft account associated with your license.

2. Installation Freezing at 90%

This is typically caused by the Windows Print Spooler service conflicting with the installer. Press Win+R, type services.msc, locate “Print Spooler”, right-click and pause it. Resume your installation, and restart the spooler when finished.

3. Excel “Out of Memory” Error

This usually occurs with overly complex spreadsheets or conflicting add-ins. Try launching Excel in Safe Mode by holding the CTRL key while clicking the Excel shortcut. If the error disappears, navigate to Options > Add-ins to disable problematic third-party extensions.

4. Outlook Cannot Connect to Server

First, verify your internet connection. If stable, navigate to Send/Receive and click “Work Offline” twice to reset the connection state. If it persists, you may need to repair your Outlook data file (.ost or .pst) using the official SCANPST.exe tool.

5. Word Application Crashing on Launch

Use the official Microsoft Office Repair Tool. Navigate to Windows Settings > Apps, find your Microsoft Office installation, click Modify, and select “Quick Repair.”
